How to install XML templates...

Please know that I test every template I offer and I know they all install correctly.

I offer my templates for download in a zipped (ie: .zip) folder. You will have to unzip this before installing as trying to upload a zip folder instead of a template file (.xml) will not work!

Log into your Blogger account and click on "Layout"

Select the "LAYOUT" tab and then from the Template page, please click on the "Edit HTML" submenu.

(click image for a larger view)

At the top of this page it says "Backup/Restore Template" and advises you to download your current template (a good idea just incase something weird happens and you want to re-install your old template).

The next step is to upload the yummylolly.com template by "browsing" your computer for the .xml file that you downloaded and clicking on "upload".

(click for a larger view)

There is no need to touch the big box of code underneath this (unless of course you know html/xml).

You MUST upload the .XML file from your computer - trying
to upload anything else will not work!!

As of March 2010, you can KEEP your widgets when changing templates.
When you upload a template to your blog now, it comes up with a prompt as below:

Clicking “Keep Widgets” will install your new template and keep the current widgets on your blog (hoorah!). Clicking “Delete” will get rid of them (der!). Sometimes you may find that you want to start again from scratch, so deleting all isn’t a bad option to have.

Sometimes when I keep my widgets I get a doubling up of my blog posts! Read how to fix it here.

Done! View your blog to see the changes! Easy peasy!

The biggest issue you'll probably have is not reading these instructions properly - please check this twice before contacting me.

OK - as I have mentioned above, the templates do install. I test them!

Sometimes Blogger encounters an error (yes, this happens to me sometimes) but it has nothing to do with the template as is, in fact, a temporary error with Blogger. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Wait a few hours and try again - or try another browser. This usually works for me. If you're having troubles still (after the confirmation to delete widgets ---> READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS)

The issue might be with the way your widgets are labelled. Click here for detailed instructions on how to fix this issue.

UPDATE - MARCH 2009
I'm afraid I am turning comments off this post because I get too many comments saying that you cannot get the template to work when I know that 99% of problems can be remedied by the above steps! I simpley do not have time to respond to individual questions so please go to the BLOGGER HELP FORUMS if you need assistance with technical errors.

Thanks and sorry!

  2. First off, THANK YOU so much for the CUTE templates. I'm not normally an all-caps kinda' girl, but your work is cute, cute, cute!

I have a quick quetion: I'm using the Drivin' to LA XML template, but I'd love to have the little moon graphic that shows up next to the "...posted by ___ at 10:00 a.m." that appears in classic version. **Is there anyway I can add that cute little moon to the XLM template?**

Thanks again so much for designing such FUN templates. I'm just getting started w/Blogger but many of my friends already have pages and NONE of theirs are THIS cool!

I cant seem to figure out how to put my little homemade logo into the top area above the cupcakes without it looking dorky but other then that WOW this does not even compare to what I had seen online... I love that this is your hobby and you share it with all of us! You are the QUEEN in my book!!

    Thanks,

  4. Nice templates. Any chance of getting copyable and pastable html code for those of us who already have a domain name? Blogger doesn't give the layout option to us onless we go through some rigamaroll CNAME business whatever that is. I've opened the XML file in Word but it the code all runs together rather than being on separate lines. Thanks in advance.

  10. Hey, Your blog designs are really cool, but I have one little problem. Well actually it's a big one. I followed the steps to download it and when I click upload, it says: Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: Content is not allowed in prolog. So, what does that mean and how do I get it to work? I am sort of new to blogger and I need some help! So if you would please help me, I would be very greatful and happy. My e-mail is car2014@gmail.com and my blog URL is http://summerof08car.blogspot.com i hope you can help!

  14. I'm having the same issue as some others. There is no "Backup/Restore Template" option on the "Edit Html" page. I'm not sure what to do.

    Thanks.

  15. Hi Judy,

Hmmm, puzzling. Do you currently have a "classic" blogger template? That may be the reason why you're not seeing "Download Full Template" in the LAYOUT >> EDIT HTML area. If you were using an XML template currently then you'd definitely see that option. If you're only seeing "change the navbar color" selection then you are 100% using a "classic" template.

To upgrade to XML or "new" blogger templates you have to do this.....
Chose "upgrade template" and then it will prompt you to chose a new design. You will then be using XML templates and can easily install one of my designs.

    Hope it helps!

  16. Hi,

I have downloaded the Dotty template and love it... just wondering is there a way to make the rhs column wider to fit my slideshow in? it cuts off the edge.

  17. Mr & Mrs Till -- yes, I can make the sidebar a little wider (it will involve making the "main" blog body slightly more narrow).

    Please send me an email:

I have gone through each step over and over for about two hours now and I keep getting them same error message after uploading the file...

"We were unable to save your template
Please correct the error below, and submit your template again.
Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: Content is not allowed in prolog."

I have tried using other templets of yours but I guess it is something that I am not getting. Do you know how I can get pas this part?

  21. Hi La Rapide Mort.....

You should ensure that you're UNZIPPED the folder you download from suckmylolly.com (don't try and install the .zip folder because it will give you an error message).

You have to unzip the .zip folder and inside that you'll find the .xml template.

Please ensure that you're trying to upload the .xml file only. This will definitely work.

    Good Luck!

  22. excuse me, can u tell me how to change the classic template into xml template? thx.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Lynn,

I sent you an email with info on how to do this (when you asked me last time) but here's the info again.....

To change the template back to XML you can select "Customise Design"
which is a tab under the template tab.

There will be a big orange button which says "Upgrade Your Template"
-- do this to switch back to XML.

    Cheers,
    Sharnee

  36. I am getting very frustrated by the similar comments I am receiving whereby people cannot install my templates when I KNOW THEY ALL WORK AS I TEST THEM!

    This is what I recommend:

    1) Check you have UNZIPPED the folder you downloaded from my site. YOU CANNOT EXPECT TO UPLOAD A .ZIP FILE AND HAVE IT WORK - the .zipped folder contains MORE than just the template so you have to UNZIP THIS BEFORE UPLOADING IT. If you don't understand what unzipping is then I really have to wonder how you're using a computer as it's an extremely simple function. Please search google if you don't know what this is. It depends what kind of computer you have.

    2) If you're trying to upload the xml file and it's not working then I suggest trying a generic blogger template (ie: "Choose New Template" under the Layout tab). There is a chance that you have some kind of glitch in a widget/gadget that is stopping you from uploading a template. Choose any old template, save it and THEN try uploading the suckmylolly.com template.

    3) Wait a while. I sometimes have errors in firefox (for no reason) and when I try again later, it's all fine. I've never had errors when using Safari, so try that! I never use Internet Explorer because it sucks.

I have had multiple emails from people who have not been able to upload templates - when I have gone to upload it for them I havce not experienced ANY errors which makes me think that people are not reading my instructions properly.

PLEASE READ ALL MY INSTRUCTIONS AND I DOUBT YOU'LL HAVE A PROBLEM.

RE-READ it carefully if you still have problems.

  37. excuse me, can u help me? i like the collars layout. and i would like to upload it. but when i uploaded it and it finished, there's some text "Widgets are about to be deleted

    * BlogList1"
how bout that? please tell me, i really like that layout! reply ASAP to my email. thanks a lot

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yes, as it says above - your widgets will be deleted when you install a new template.

THIS IS NORMAL and a major bummer when it comes to Blogger.

You should back up your widget/gadget data before installing a template (ie: copy and paste it into a word document) and then when you've installed a new template - re-add this widget/gadget stuff.

  40. Just wanted to thank you for creating this and other beautiful templates!

    You're amazing!

Are you considering creating this template in other colors?

  41. I am actually having the problems everyone else is having. The folder is unzipped, but I either get blogger error bX-gs3myh or some other letter variation, or I get that error message, "Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly". Which error message I get depends on if I am uploading XML, or copy and pasting the code. Either way I can't get it to work.

I DO use Internet Explorer, and wonder if these other people are too that we can't get it to work, but you can. Maybe I will test this theory.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yep, I tested my theory and it worked just fine with fire fox, no errors. Clearly the problem is Internet Explorer...for those of you who do know what your doing and are using IE, there is your problem.

    ReplyDelete
  50. siskadm: If you're seeing TEMPLATE and not LAYOUT - then you're using CLASSIC blogger and not NEW/XML blogger. The instructions for changing to NEW/XML blogger are above.

To switch to "NEW/XML" blogger all you have to do is click on "Customise Design" and it will guide you through the steps and ask you to pick a new design. PICK ANY TEMPLATE, save it and then you'll see that your "LAYOUT" tab is back.

You can then upload one of my templates.

    :-)

  58. Hi,
I'm getting the same error message as everyone else. I HAVE unzipped the file, and i've tried to upload it in IE, and Mozilla, and also Safari. Neither of those three work.
I think because you said you are using a Mac then that must be why YOU and only you can upload it properly.
And i'm using the new blogger too, and i've read and reread your instructions many times and followed them to the letter.
It's such a shame as i love this blog template, but oh well.

I think because you said you are using a Mac then that must be why YOU and only you can upload it properly.

Who said I'm the ONLY one who can upload these properly? Hundreds of people have been able to upload the templates without issue - some using windows, some mac, some IE, Mozilla, Chrome etc.
